Near North Canoe Center
Studio III | Fall 2019

For the program studio we were given a program and a verb, boat making & bridge, which we then researched to design a building. In addition, we were given a couple sites for our program. I chose the Near North Community in Minneapolis. This neighborhood was impacted by the construction of Interstate 94 and industrial zoning which cut off access to the Mississippi River.
Using my two words I created a building that aims to bridge the Near North Community back to the Mississippi River by creating a space that allows the people of the community to learn physical and technological skills of canoe making and use. In addition, the project contains a sub-project of shipping containers that can be placed along the river to create an outpost.

Canoe Model
This model making project was an extension of the Near North Canoe center. While researching the program for the canoe center I thought it would be a good idea to make a scale model of a canoe. I have always wanted to build my own cedar strip canoe. I went through the same process as making a full scale canoe which taught me a lot about the process. This research was crucial for discovering the programmatic spaces needed in the canoe build center. After building the small scale canoe I definitely want to spend time making a full scale canoe.
