For studio V we were each given a material system for the semester from which we had to adapt to residential architecture. Our material was precast concrete. After researching the constraints of precast concrete and taking precedent from Summary’s project 1000 m2 we decided specifically on the box culvert.
Our site is set on a typical Minneapolis 120’ by 40’ lot with an existing house on the parcel. We adapted this industrial system to residential architecture by creating a single unit. This unit was then shifted to make individual spaces within the ADU. The project acted as a stepping stone for further development within the semester and served as a basis for discovering the ruleset for working with box culverts. This ruleset was carried over to the other projects and started to inform aspects of the design.
