This project reveals the physical differences between two districts located on the coast of Portland Maine though the use of the oceans tides. The land to the south west of the site is industrialized and the tidal zone is almost non present to the occupants of the area. The land to the North East consists of the promenade trail where the tidal zone is shown but not as easily accessed. By carving out a mass along the coast the two district sides are revealed. The occupant is exposed to this break and smaller interventions which reveal the tidal zone in a way unique to the respective sides.
Observation Platform
The platform is the closest intervention to the waterfront district. It aims to represent the type of interaction someone would have with the ocean in the waterfront district. The platform brings the person out over the water where they are able to view the changing tides from a distance.
Carve
The carve is the breather space between the two districts. It is a cut in the land to show the distinct differences between the two sides. On the waterfront side there are steps which only reveal themselves during certain times of the day due to the tides. On the promenade side there is a floating pier which allows access to the water during all times of the day.
Floating Docks
Being a community sailing center the docks became a design opportunity to show the effect of the tides on access to the boats. The pier is separated into two parts: a long straight walkway/ daily boat storage and floating islands which house overflow boat storage. Connecting the islands to the main dock are stationary walkways at varying heights. The combination of these elements creates a scenario where the islands are only accessible when the tide is at the right height.
Tide Pools
The last intervention is closest to the promenade side. It reveals the different stages of the tidal zone and what animals and plants live within each zone. The intervention consists of a series of retaining walls at varying heights which coincide with different regions within the intertidal zone. The paths through the zones bring the person in contact with each of the zones different traits which can be easily ignored along the rest of the eastern promenade.
