Stage Portal
Furniture Design   |   Spring 2021

This screen was created to experiment with thresholds and the passage/blocking of views and people through space. The portrayal of a stage added a playfulness to the screen allowing a moving curtain and fun compositions with different curtain heights. The front of the screen has a polished clean look while backstage exposes the supports as well as the weights weighing down the frame. When the screen is placed on the border between a bedroom and a living room it acts as a facade hiding the private and messy bedroom from the clean and composed living room. The screen works well in this case because it is able to hide the necessary messiness to keep the other side clean. Similar to the backstage of a theater holding all the necessary props and machinery to run a show. With this project I learned to let loose on the practicality of the piece of furniture in order make something fun and interesting.
