Studio Lamp
Independent Project   |   Fall 2018

This independent project came to me after doing a precedent study on timber building called Nest We Grow. The project uses pieces of timber that are linked together to create a strong frame with interesting connections. I wanted to harness this thinking for the design of my lamp. The frame of my lamp is constructed with a single stick of wood that is cut into different lengths. The small size of the members makes it easy to make skilled joints like a mortise and tenon. This allowed the construction to be free of nails and screws.
After the frame was built, I chose one memorable project from each studio and made a simplified representation of the project to be laser cut and inserted into the frame.
Studio I
This template represents my drawing from the studio drawing competition. It depicts a piece of artwork at the Franconia sculpture park. The piece is called Reclamation by Melanie Van Houten.
Studio II
This template represents the giant site model my classmates and I spend a lot of time building. I was in charge of making the buildings and in doing so learned how to use the laser cutter.
Studio III
I got the idea to make the lamp cutouts from the precedent study of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The spare parts from the model fit nicely into the lamp frame.
Studio IV
This cutout represents a studio research project on the urban infrastructure of Minneapolis. I learned a lot about the formation of the city grid and was able to contrast it to the suburbs.
